The record
does exist, of course, but we are talking about the
previous value: the value before the record was posted (committed) the last time (with TableUpdate()).
If you issue APPEND BLANK and then TableUpdate(), the old value (OldVal()) will, of course, be empty. But if you try to do this, you will most likely violate the rules of your DB.
