I certainly wouldn't want to sound like a smart ass here, but you may notice that your eyelids will extend to cover the pupils and your head will swivel back and forth so that you may avert your gaze. That way you don't have to look at things you don't wish to.

However, I suspect that this is like an automobile accident where it hurts to look but you can't take your eyes off of it.
