Which Cobol, which OS, any info on table structure? If it uses EBCDIC instead of ASCII, you may have to revert to the other solution. The cobol routine need not be much complicated - simply reads the old file, and copies the records into a sequential file, with all the comp-x numerics converted to simple picture numerics, the preferred type being Line Sequential, which means the records have a regular cr+lf at the end. If this is not feasible, well, e-mail me a sample with a few dozen records (zipped if possible) and I'll see what I can do.
