If you do not already have an N-Tier design then you are talking probably a major rewrite. OTOH if you are already using local views instead of accessing your DBFs directly, then it might not be too difficult to change to a client-server (2-Tier) design where you basically switch DBCs to use one with remote views with the same view names, and you are C/S and can talk to other back-ends.

Do an analysis of your current data access scheme to see how much work will be required. Consider that not all tables need/will be upsized to SQL/Server o similar as you may want to keep them locally in DBFs.
