CA are usually very helpfull (for free) if you ask them nicely.
Can you read the entire dbf with FP 2.6/VFP? If you can, you could open it, copy to ..., delete the clipper index and recreate the index with dbu. Be careful though, and make lots of backups!
If you can open it in Excel you could try to repair it, save as DB3 and the either copy to an ASCII file, zap & append from ASCII.
Something along those lines usually works.
Let me know how it goes, if you send me a copy of the file(s) and short description, I'll take a look at it as well.
