Where did you read this? I for one do not believe it. But, even if it were true, I would say "So What??" If it took 1 millescond to access it by ordinal position, 4 millesconds to access it by name is no big deal. Working with names as opposed to numbers is alot easier. And, if there is a small trade-off in performance, I am happy to pay it.

Keep in mind that if you create some mechanisim to convert from name to ordinal position, any speed benefits of working with the ordinal position will be lost.
