Maybe, maybe not :-) IMHO its much more than that. C# is nothing without the CLR, its Microsoft's chance to get a language that fully supports all of the functionality exposed by the CLR.

Don't you think Java has more than a passing resemblence to C/C++? How do you think the compiler developers got Java compilers out so quick? That tells me that both Sun and Microsoft think C++ is pretty good, it just needed an overhaul. Again only my opinion :-)
