I think that what Nick meant was that the view designer works well on straight parent -> child -> grandchild types of relationships. What it does not handle well is joins that involve more than 2 unrelated siblings that are related to a common parent because of the nested join syntax used by the view designer.

This error is very common when trying to use the VD to create views that involve thes kind of relationship.
