In the most simple case recno()/reccount() is enough. If you have changed the order of rows by using index, use ActiveRow of the grid, however it is available only when grid is focused, after 2 readings of that property; in addition, it is slow. If you have deleted records not visible, filter set, etc etc - no way but create special field that will be used to numerate each record, that you can use that field values to display what you want. This is the most generic approach (take a look to the Thread #526159 Message #526175 where I just posted an approach of organizing order numbers.)
