Rather than setting a filter on the table with your form, try the following

*!* Assume textbox on the form which asks for a filter value
LOCAL lcFilter
lcFilter = THISFORM.txtFilter.VALUE

REPORT FORM MyReport PREVIEW FOR MyTable.MyField = &lcFilter

Does that do what you want?
