Hi Aston,

This is an excerpt from MS Access Help:
MS Access can automatically compact a MS Access database or
 MS Access project every time you close it. 

Open the Access database or Access project that you want MS Access to 
compact automatically.

On the Tools menu, click Options.

Click the General tab.

Select the Compact On Close check box. 
Note:   Compacting does not occur if you close a multiuser (shared) database 
while another user has it open.
Another way to mantain your Access database in good shape would be to use special utility from FMS and compact the database during night time. Please see the link below:
