A "few" of the reasons might include:

1) Maybe somebody renumbered the Invoice.

2) The files were restored from a previous backup.

3) The Invoice was "archived" ?

4) A program bug that did allow somebody to delete

5) The Invoice is actually there but the Index is corrupt

6) The hardcopy wasn't actually an Invoice ... maybe it was actually a Purchase Order or a Sales Order
