Ours are not batch reports, although we probably should have those too. The user asks for a report and immediately prints it, so speed is important.

Yes, that would solve the problem of gathering in one record the summary data. A good way to accomplish that would be to do an initial select which filters the data and then have a standard routine or two that summarize that into the intermediate table. Good idea.
