We saw heavy locking under Novell with an app that worked perfectly everywhere else. We found 2 issues: First, any "paths" set in any application to servers that no longer exist, can cause a mighty Novell "network walk" that may never finish, especially if you have a WAN. WARNING this can be caused by tables in a datasession pointing to a location that is no longer accessible. And Word documents created using a template in a location that is no longer accessible, can also do it.
So check your paths!
Second, SQL Server 6.5 or earlier using the wrong ODBC Version, can lock firm.
What versions of Novell and (if applicable) ODBC are you using?

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
