I think everyone else has given you good suggestions to this.. but I will just elaborate on the network side of things..

Where do you have the VFP runtime files stored? if they are on the network and you are having NW problems then VFP will fall over..probably without a nice error message.
I would do a Hard Reset on all your switches (hubs routers etc).. especially as you say you have removed a server. then start looking for dodgy network cards or cabling. How many collisions/ lost packets are you getting on the server etc.
Packet sniffers are meant to be pretty good for this kind of thing.
