Something simple is using frontpage, security features, what it does is modify at the .htaccess file for a specific directory

I think in front page its under tools security, or site - security. But there you can set up one user . to enable them to view or access all files in a specific directory.

Any call, or request to that directory will be challanged. by the servers.

But my guess is that the server has to receive the password and then load the password protected web page.
