Thanks for your response Colin. In my original note I sent out, I did check the value of thisform.cboSurname.value. It was "000003" which is type character. I also checked the value of staff.kstaff in the watch window of the debugger and it was also type character, a value of " ". This is why I'm so puzzled. I can't find out where the data type is not matching.
