Not so much a solution as a workaround - if macros don't work then don't use them.

I agree that macros should work in both cases & I would be interested to know why they didn't in the first place. I had assumed (possibly wrongly) that in the original question, that the path used in both instances was the same, so Nancy's comment about spaces causing it not to work seemed to be as much out of order as Andrew's theory. Macro substitution should work the same in either place. Similar to her comments about Andrew testing out his theory - had she spent the 5 minutes she suggested testing her theory & proving that having spaces in the path will cause macro substitution to fail in classes but not in programs. I spent the time trying it & could not get the inconsistent results of the original problem. Maybe Nancy's solution worked - but her theory behind the original problem is as dubious as Andrews.
