The grid is actually editable so any changes you make can be posted to the VCX. The next time you open the VCX, you will see your changes. I'm not sure about the freeware version (don't know how old it is), but I use the current version that comes with the product all the time.
Drew Speedie has done a few DevCon seminars on hacking VCXs/SCXs. You can get his e-mail from the website and see if he has anything he could you on the subject.
