Why, sometimes, when displaying a message in a thread in the bottom of my screen, is the display wider than the screen...w/a scroll bar at the bottom?

Usually the width is proper for my screeen and there is no scroll bar...sometimes it's a bit wider and just now, i'm looking at a message that is about double wide...is there anything that * I * can do about that?
