Hi George,

On my last machine I saw some horrible problems of this general genre. Compaq 733 MHz, 128 MB RAM, Win2k OS, Novell Client. Saw GPF's of this nature in several applications. Bring up the Save As dialog, click the Drive drop-down and it was history. Same with IE 5, when pointing to a file system file, click the Address drop-down arrow and it was history. If pointing to an Internet address, drop-down drops ok. In SQL Query Analyzer, I could access only the directory the Save As dialog ( or any other ) came up as default. Any movement and SQL QA was gone.

We contacted MS and they said it must be due to a corrupt NT profile. Feeling was installing VS or similar applications under a non-Administrator profile was somehow corrupting the profile, even though we have admin rights on the machine. On my new machine I was careful to install all applications under the Admin ID and I have had no problems to this point. But again, this was Win2K. Very frustrating.
