I should have mentioned in the message that I'm using 'Client for Microsoft Networks'. Based on the knowledge base article on Microsoft's web site it appears this is a known problem. The article that I found is titled "Desktop May Appear Before You Can Log On". However, the cause and resolution doesn't apply in my case. The PC that has this problem is at one of my regions. I think I'll try on my next visit to enter a different name and password to see if in the boot process it will stop at the log on screen.
