Nowhere in the "common literature" does it say they "interpreting" CANNOT involve an "intermediate" step or that it involves ONLY "pure text".

By your definition, even Intellisense would "compromise" interpreting since it may have influenced the preparation of the original text (by pointing out "errors", reformatting, etc.)
