If you know C/C++ then learning the principles of DirectX (device selection, matrix operations etc) is easy, although not as easy as VB. I guess for the type of things you are doing then DirectX 7 would be of more benifit as it still has the DirectDraw interfaces. My personal preference is DirectX 8, if you want to prototype things in a hurry they provide a C++ wrapper class.
