In my words (usually English) a cursor is simply a temporary table in memory. Others may jump in and talk about how something may be written to the disk and all that, but for the purposes of simplicity it is just like having a table that physically doesn't exist. When you run a SQL statement, the returned query is a cursor. There are other example to create/use cursor, but that's the simplest.
