I know this is not what you were asking for... but have a look at this site

It does for DVD collections what you want to do for CD's

You just type in the code on the back of the DVD and it does the rest
there is software you can download which catalogues all your collection
It gets it's references via the internet so it's always up to date, it even has pictures and artists etc.

Don't know if this will give you a lead into the CD equivalent
