I haven't done text printing since VFP. However the problem you described existed in fox2x days and I created a preprocessor routine that strips out unwanted chars from textfile (especially line-box would cause it sending chr(10)). Hope I can find it again.
Maybe easiest solution would be printing with textmerge or ?. Whenever I need generic printing I go that way instead of report writer.
