>Actually it depends on what you want to do. Most pre-VFP stuff that didn't use buffering, tended to keep multilocks off unless you specifically wanted to have multiple records in a table locked at a time. So the answer is both ON and OFF.

Hacker's Guide says:
"MULTILOCKS actually uses a different technology than the older single-lock-per-table technique. Because it doesn't seem to make an extraordinary demand on resources, we recommend you leave MULTILOCKS ON all the time."
