Hi!
As I understood, you populate the children on the fly just when user click on the parent, but when there are no children - no + sign, right? Add an empty node to the parent that will have children when expanded. Than, when expand such parent, user will see the empty line first. You at that moment remove that empty node and add required children. Do the same for all child nodes.
