I'm not convinced yet. Right now, I think it's the equivalent of wwipstuff for SMTP e-mail. Also, apparently you don't have to use the IIS SMTP server.
In: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnasdj99/html/asp9951.asp
it says: "The local SMTP Server delivers the message itself--or you can use another SMTP Server that acts as an Internet mail gateway". Also, from everything I've read, the setup, administration and programming of CDONTS is very simple.

Don't get me wrong - if you need more than plain SMTP , then wwipstuff or the new one from AFPweb should be looked at...

>>I may have spoken too soon. I searched the message board at west-wind and one message said you could just use cdonts.dll programatically just like wwipstuff. You would still have to specify an email server just like you would in wwipstuff...

>Well, you do use it programatically, but it depends on the SMTP service, which I believe depends on IIS. So, it would be a solution only if all of the machines are running NT or W2K. Further, these services would have to be configured correctly on *every* workstation.
