Jim,

A big part of the problem comes from things outside of Microsoft's control. How could they test for every possible hardware combination? Or every possible software combination? There is no way they can do this. Considering the complexity of something like an OS and the number of different combinations of hardware and software that people have, I'm suprised there aren't more bugs than there are.

I'm betting that MS will eventually reduce the number of semi-independent parts SIGNIFICANTLY in favour of delivering 99.9999% reliable software.
