Here is a partial quote from Woody's Office Watch (WOW):

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. NO NEW VIRUS NEWS
Last week in WOW I told you about Georgi Guninski's latest
exploit, a hole he discovered in Office XP/Outlook 2002
that could allow a "bad" Web page to do almost anything to
your PC. When we left Georgi last week, riding into the
Romanian sunset, Microsoft was hot on the trail working on
a fix. As far as I know, no "bad" Web pages have appeared -
but Microsoft hasn't delivered the fix, either. You might
want to keep an eye on
http://www.Microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-038.asp
to see when MS releases the patch.
Long-time WOWser Mike Shacter wrote: "I had not realized
the seriousness of the most recent Outlook security breach
until I read your last newsletter. Of course, there is a
much less severe interim solution than the suggestion of
turning off all ActiveX controls in IE. The simpler
solution is simply to deregister the "Outlook View
Control". The following command worked for me:
c:\windows\system\regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office10\outlctl.dll"
Microsoft could have easily posted an interim solution that
accomplished the same thing (remove the CLSID from the
registry), and then restore it when the final patch is
available.
The business about installing the Security Patch is
baloney. Anyone who had followed your frequent advice to
upgrade the Outlook security zone level to "Restricted
Sites" would be protected without the other messiness of
the security patch."
Mike knows whereof he speaks. His company makes
PocketKnife, an Outlook add-on that lets you get at
Contacts info naturally (how many times have you copied the
name, then the address, then the phone number from your
Contacts list into a document or email message?), and a
bunch more. http://www.xintercept.com for details.
