>>>>Why? He wants a Volvo as his first car, and with you two, I'll end up being badgered about it until he gets it. No thanks.:-)

>>>So what does it matter to you what he wants for his first car? If he can afford the car and the insurance, that's his business.

>>< g > That's what we tell him. But we did buy his older brother a car when he was 16, so we're kind of caught.

>>Well, the car is his birthday/high school graduation/Christmas present. He turned 18 on the first of this month, and he's entering his senior year in H.S. < George grumbles that his parents never bought him a car, nor sent him on a trip to Spain or Cancun, then remembers that he went to private school while his kids have gone to public schools >

>When I was 16 my grandfather offered to buy me a car. All the guys in my neighborhood had cars at 16. I told him thank you but no - the insurance was too expensive. I bought my own car when I was 22 and liked it that way.

My wife bought her own first car. She, however, grew up (mostly) in the Chicago suburbs and a car is pretty much of a necessity. I grew up in the city where it wasn't. Where we live now, a car is a necessity.

>Our daughter turned 18 and asked me to teach her how to drive. I did and she bought a car. Our son was 20 and got inspired by his sister so I taught him how to drive. Then our son bought a car. Now I ask you , why is it impossible for a husband to teach his wife how to drive? I sent my wife to driving school and she was very happy.

My wife has taught both our sons to drive.

>A friend of mine was teaching his wife to drive in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. He was concerned as his wife was headed for a tree and said stop. No response. Stop! Still no response. STOP!!! Crash - car totaled into tree! Wifes response: "Well, you did not have to shout"!

As a driver, I'd put my wife up against just about any man. She's an excellent driver. As a matter of fact, when we were taking a trip last February to Macon, we had a tire blow while we were in the middle lane on I-75 at 70 MPH and the road was quite busy. Her skill in getting us to the shoulder of the road probably saved both our lives.
