>There are more Yanks down here than you might think. Having originally moved here from NYC nearly 11 years ago I find that I'm now resentful of all these "Northerners" coming down. Seemed different for some reason back in 1990 when I was the one moving south... A bit off topic, but considering the thread title and subsequent posts, I'm guessing I'm safe. :)

Renoir;
I have a good idea of what you mean. There will always be change. When I was 10, there were about 7 million people in California. You could go camping or whatever and enjoy your self. In 1968, July 4th, we went to Yosemite, and were informed "we had to make reservations through Ticketron". What the hel*? Is this a rock concert? No - too many people. Now we have 34 million people and it is difficult to move around even at the mall.
As a fourth generation San Franciscan, I was the first member of the family to move outside of the city. As a teenager I began thinking about some numbers. There were 750,000 people in the city. San Francisco cannot expand it is about 7 miles by 7 miles - surrounded by water on three sides and a different county to the south. Where do kids that grow up live in the city? There is no room. Today there are about 600,000 people in the city - but that is another story - and there are about 1/3 fewer children.
I traveled throughout the United States for many years and lived in a number of places (thanks to the United States Air Force). Everywhere I went they resented anyone from other areas moving in. I know the feeling!
