It seems to me that the table approach is a) easier to implement, and b) it allows the users to switch machines. About the only disadvantage I see is that it is not the MS-sanctioned method; but who cares? I don't see any further disadvantages. I understand that with the new .NET approach, even MS has stopped using the registry - but I have no clear idea about what the replacement will be.
