A couple of years ago, a friend of mine created some custom sounds. As I was there and witnessed how the critical error sound was created, I still use it today. Basically, we were in his garage. He pushed record, then up-ended a toolbox containing about 200 wrenches of various sizes on the cement floor. It's a really good sound!
