WRT ...use NODEFAULT actually, the default is that the baseclass event fires unless you specifically tell it to. The other option is that base class events don't fire unless you tell them too. It's just a choice the language architects had to make. For me, I prefer the way it works, since it is less common that I don't want the base behavior. Imagine having to do DODEFAULT() in every keypress. <g>

So, in your case, if you want to short circuit the native event, you tell it to. I like that, also, because it's self-documenting.
