Theodore Bikel is a folk singer and actor dating back to at least the 60's. He specialized in Yiddish and Russian songs, but also included many other cultures as well. His album "Bravo Bikel" contained a comedy bit which I believe he attributed to a story by Robert Nathan (but my memory is several decades old on this one). The bit describes

I thought it was hysterically funny when I heard it in the mid 60's. I heard it again about 10 years ago and it was still funny. Then again, my version of funny seems to differ significanly from that in much of the civilized world.
