>>Whenever I talk about what I do with someone they ask if I use Java and when I answer no they kind of clam up and shake their head or tell me to learn Java<<
Get used to it. The next generation of programmers has largely trained with Java. They are linux and Java-centric.
>>I'm hoping .NET will become a major player so I can learn that instead. Already know and like VB so the ramp up to VB.NET shouldn't be too tough.<<
OK, good luck. If you don't have heaps of legacy code in VB, you may well be right there.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
