Sounds, partially, like the old mode problem. Depending on the printer, if the mode is set to opaque for the fields or text, the output will be black boxes. The quickest way I've found to fix this (if it is indeed the problem) is to open the report as a table and then:

REPLACE ALL MODE WITH 1 FOR INLIST(OBJTYPE, 5, 8) AND PLATFORM = 'WINDOWS'

That should get it.
