Actually, it is not limited, but keep in mind that a single line finished by ';' should not reach 256 characters. With UNION we managed to make quite huge SQL statements that are far longer than 8,192 characters. Anyway, certain parts of a single SQL statamenet also have limitations. For example, group by fields number, sorting fields number, the number of items in the 'IN ()' list etc. Give more specifics.
