unless the Novell server(s) are running in NDS mode only. If Bindery Emulation mode is available the MS client should work fine running on straight IP as long as the server is running IP as well.

If your network guys say they have to run the Novell client, that probably means they're using ZENWorks, a network management tool. It absolutely requires Client32 to utilize it.
Rich hit the nail on the head with the client configuration. It minimizes, but doesn't completely eliminate, the issues with files left open. I also recommend using SDT in this instance to help mitigate problems with corrupted table headers and indexes due to Client32 problems.
The only other suggestion is to get on Novell's developers email list so you can hear about new client releases. Novell is aware of the W2K client issues and "they're working on it."
