If it started "working" after you pulled the field, then the other fields were "shifted up" and my quess is that it's not really working but the operations for the remaining fields are "off by one". If alignment is on 4 byte boundaries, then adding a dummy 2 byte field "after" the field you pulled should fix the problem.
