Start with a defrag and diskscan of the hard drives.

I defraged the D:, not the C:. I'll try that. Didn't run diskscan. I'll try that, too.

Clean out temp folders, especially the ones under Windows and those used by IE.

This I do frequently. Always seems to be a lot of junk in there. :)

If you've installed and uninstalled lots of software, run RegClean to remove unneeded registry entries.

RegClean? Is that something that comes with Windows? I'm not at home and have a different OS here so can't check.

How big is your Windows swap file? IMO, it should be at least 2x physical memory.

Hmmmmm... I don't know this one. Could you tell me simply how to get to in on Win98SE? Otherwise, I'll look through the help file when I get home.
