I don't know if there's anything special about it... It's just what I'm used to using and what my friends use so it's easy to get help with if I have a problem. I don't know anyone who caps on linux, so if I ran into a problem, I'd be out of luck.

Capping: AVI_IO usually. Occasionally PC-VCR that came with my card.
Editing: VirtualDub
Encoding: TMPGEnc for MPGs. VirtualDub for divx. Windows Media Encoder for WMV. Rarely, RealProducer for RMs.
