Doug --

Old thread, but new technology...

As you're well aware, the HTML surface is being used by more and more sophisticated "assisting" technologies.

Anyway, I just saw a note on the W3 site (on my way to looking up something else), that the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) proposed recommendation had been published. It's a 2D vector graphic library, primarily sponsored by Adobe at this point with a plugin as well as a number of other industry leaders, including Microsoft, lending moral support.

SVG does roughly parallel the capability of VML -- Microsoft's proprietary Vector Markup Language for browsers introduced in 1998. There was an initial burst of enthusiasm after the release, which included some cartographic use (available on the net), but little has been done since then.

Site for SVG mapping: http://www.carto.net/papers/svg/index_e.html.

Link in main article for cartographic applications of SVG: www.carto.net/papers/svg/first_e.html.

W3 info RE SVG: http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/Overview.htm8.

It would be interesting to generate HTML locally with the desired data and commands, and have the user interact through a web browser. The cartographic applications link gives some good examples.
