>Hmmm... You "penguins" must use different terminology. :) In Windows Land, "ripping a CD" is taking music off an audio CD and putting it into MP3 (or similar) format.

It's the same in Penquin Land, but 'ripping' is used for meaning video too.
>100MB? Yeah, that would be a problem only being able to cap 3 seconds of video at a time!

>Interesting hearing that people are capping on linux boxes. I've never met anyone that does before. What formats can it handle?

Pretty much about everything, sooner or later. Quicktime without plugins are a problem.

>I'm guessing not WMV. :)

wmv, being propriatary, is the second problem, but it didn't interfer with me watching to final shows STV, which I had missed, They are nearly 1GB of video! Xamin supplies Windows codecs Other than Quicktime and wmv formats, both of which seem to be tweeked regulary, audio and video formats are covered. Penquins are creating their own audio format, "Ogg Vorbis" (don't ask me what it means... :) which is Open Source and free. V 1.0 is about to be released. RealPlayer is available, along with Jukebox and the other commerical players.

Like any other area of software in Linux, there are dozens of audio apps available. Some are pitiful and others are awesome. Most are GPL, including the best, like Broadcast2000.

In the areas of science, math, physics, engineering and word processing, applications exist like leaves on a tree. But, the one area where I find scarcity is in OCR applications. There are several but only one exists that is any good.

Well, I'm writing from home, so I'll sign off and get back to FlightGear, my flight simulator - GPL, of course.

>>So, you doing with TV video what Linux folks do with entertainment CDs (it's called 'ripping' a CD). It turns out that captureing video is all the rage in Penquin Land, too! The tool of choice is Broadway 2000, which is free, but there are several others. The biggest problem currently is with Athlon chips that have the 'southpark' problem that interfers with capturing files of lengths greater than 100MB. Kernel solutions are now out.
