I seem to recall that the Corvair was an attempt to make a car that had the same kind of drivetrain that the VW Beetle did. I don't recall the actual name but the two rear wheels would 'fold' inward and for off-road vehicles this is a real benefit as it helps to keep from getting stuck in the sand. They were wildly popular about the time the Corvair was introduced...
