Steve,

Check you client side protocols. Make sure you have TCP/IP and NamedPipes installed. If your client isn't using a protocol the server is using, no takie. Also, make sure you are using the correct port. Check the server from the server machine and see what port you are running for ip, and make sure the client is setup to use that port.
