>The same with us (being younger and more ignornant) since it was 28+ years ago. Fortunately, we were fine. We had been warned by my mother and father. They met initially in Savannah, GA (my Dad was from Chicago, my Mom from Philadelphia) during World War II. Both were stationed at Hunter AFB there. Later they were transfered to Merced, CA and both had experience with the weather out there.< s >

George;

The weather in Merced (about 75 miles East of San Francisco) is HOT in the summer - like 100 to 110. At the same time San Francisco has an average summer high of 69. The reason for the difference in temperature is the prevailing Westerly winds, coastal fog and coastal hills which act as a barrier between the coast and Central Valley. These same coastal hills protect Merced from the fog.

Now when the winds come from the east you will get hot weather in San Francisco, which normally will occur in October. This year we got a major dose of hot weather in May like 100 to 110 about once a week for six weeks. This summer has been relatively cool which has helped our power problems tremendously. What makes hot weather uncomfortable in San Francisco is that air conditioning is not common since there are so few warm or hot days. San Jose offices are air conditioned as it is much warmer 50 miles south of the city and 25 miles away from the ocean, with more coastal hills.

I spent about 18 months in Orlando, Florida. It seemed to be 104 every day during the summer with 99.9 to 100 % humidity. If you stood still for five minutes Spanish mold would be hanging from your limbs and any leather you were wearing would be ruined from mold. The lightning strikes viewed from Orlando were the most beautiful I have ever seen!
